In most places in this country. it is illegal to "Doctor Shop.' Most people
have heard of this term, but many are not exactly sure what it
means. Basically, doctor shopping is looking for a doctor to write a
prescription (almost always for a painkiller). This, in and of itself is
not a crime, but if you are already under the care of another doctor and
receiving treatment, it then does become a crime.
Drug addictions can make people do desperate and foolish things. Doctor
Shopping is illegal both for the patient and for the doctor who writes
the offending prescription, if the doctor knows the patient currently is
under the care of another physician and/or currently has a prescription.
