Should Those Convicted of DUI be "Branded?"
A state congressman from Mississippi has proposed a bill that would require those convicted of two or more DUI charges to have special license plates letting other drivers (and the police) know immediately that they have a "drinking problem."
The idea that Gary Chism has is that if you are a serial DUI offender and those driving in your immediate proximity know it, you will probably be much more less likely to drive intoxicated as folks in those nearby cars would be much more likely to call 911 on their cell phones if they noticed any erratic driving.
Of course, there is another side to this, in that the police, friends and business associates would be predisposed to negative views about the driver of a car with those plates, and may be subject to unfair harassment by the police and ridicule by friends and associates.
Is this merely a modern way of putting someone in the stockade? Or is it another tool society can use to curb and prevent its members from operating their vehicles under the influence?
