How Much Can I Toke Before It's A DUI?
With eleven states now legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana, those who use the drug need to ask themselves "Am I OK to drive?" You have the same responsibilities with marijuana as you do with alcohol to protect yourself and others from harm.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined, from statistics, that after alcohol, marijuana is the next most common psychoactive substance found to be associated with traffic fatalities. A legislator in Florida took it upon himself to investigate how much THC (the active compound in marijuana) could cause impairment.
The scientific consensus he found is that 5 nanograms of THC in the bloodstream should be considered legally intoxicating. A bill declaring this is before the Florida legislature. If passed, the only remaining issue will be to determine a way to test for this. In any case, you need to ask yourself if you are really completely sober before you get behind the wheel. If you have any question, don't!
