What Do Ignition Interlock Devices Measure?

Sometimes states will issue hardship licenses to individuals who have been convicted of DUIs. In order to be eligible for a hardship license, many states require that the driver install an Ignition Interlock Device on their vehicle. This device is basically a breathalyzer attached to the ignition system that measures BAC and then either allows the car's engine to start or prevents the car's engine from starting based on the measured BAC level.

There are a few other things that an Ignition Interlock Device measures, which people should be aware of as all of these data are reported to law enforcement. Here is what an IID measures:

- if you have a detectable BAC,
- if you try to start the car without the test,
- if you refuse to take a rolling test,
- if you fail a rolling test, or
- if you tamper with or disconnect the device,
- the distance you have traveled, and
- the number of times you stopped and started your vehicle.
