What Happens During "License and Registration?"

Everyone is familiar with this part of a traffic stop. Whether your tail light is out, you were speeding or operating a vehicle when you shouldn't be this familiar phrase is actually part of the investigation against you.

Officers are trained to look for certain behaviors when you are asked for your license and registration. Among the actions they notice are the following:

Are you fumbling with your keys?

Do you have trouble locating your paperwork?

Is your face flushed or eyes bloodshot?

Are there "empties" in the vehicle?

Does the officer smell alcohol?

Does the officer notice any drug paraphernalia?

These are just a few of the things that officers look for while you are getting your license and registration. Always remember never to give anything more than the required paperwork and your name to an officer and then call an experienced attorney. If you live in Burlington, Essex, Colchester, Winooski, Williston, Shelburne or anywhere in the State of Vermont, and have been arrested or charged with DUI or any crime, call Handy Law for aggressive and experienced legal defense.
