There has been much in the press recently about police being required to wear body cams. For those who do not know, these are devices that record both audio and video and digitally save that data to a digital storage device carried by the officer. This is then downloaded at the end of an officer's shift and is kept for a period of time, especially if a crime was investigated or an arrest was made during that officer's shift.
Of course, this can be double-edged. If a defendant in a DUI case is clearly slurring his speech and has glassy eyes, a body cam recording can present evidence that is very difficult to refute. On the other
hand, if the defendant is clearly in control and behaving responsibly, a body cam recording can be vital in keeping an innocent individual free of a criminal charge.
Some departments cannot afford body cams and in many states, you could find yourself in a jurisdiction where every interaction an offer has is recorded and others where there simply isn't or may never be a budget to outfit officers with body cam equipment.
Regardless, of course, always conduct yourself in a legal and responsible manner at all times.
