In California, a bill was passed recently that allows insurance companies to charge higher premiums to those convicted of a DUI for ten years. This will end up costing an individual convicted of DUI literally thousands of dollars more in car insurance premiums compared to a driver who has not had a DUI.

California also added "good driver discounts" as part of its state law on car insurance policy. You can probably guess though, that if you had a DUI in the past ten years, you are not eligible for this discount!
